Mentorship Program

What is the purpose of the Mentorship Program?

The purpose of the Mentorship Program is to provide support for international and exchange students in making the transition to McMaster University and life in Canada. It is a student-led program that encourages and promotes multicultural friendships and develops an understanding between new and current students of diverse cultural backgrounds.

How does the program work?

  • A new international or exchange student is paired with a current McMaster student during their period at McMaster. Through one on one contact, the Mentor supports their Mentee in adjusting to McMaster life and provides friendship and guidance where needed.
  • The matching of the Mentor with the Mentee is based on the information provided in both the Mentee’s and Mentor’s applications. They are paired based on similar factors such as academic program, interests, hobbies, age, etc.
  • Once a Mentor has been matched with a Mentee, they will be in regular contact with each other through msn, facebook, e-mail, phone and/or meetings until midway through the academic term and the Mentee has had completed their transition period at McMaster.

Special Considerations:

This program is optional. International and Exchange students do not have to participate. However, we do encourage new students to ensure that they have a support system during their transition period as it can be overwhelming at times. Once the applications for mentors reach the total number of volunteers, we will start a waiting list and keep the applications until new Mentors are needed.
